Luvertha August, a lifelong resident of Lake Charles, is a graduate of W. O. Boston High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education with a minor in Library Science from McNeese State University.

 

August is a retired Calcasieu Parish school teacher.  She began her teaching career at Saint Katherine Drexel Sacred Heart Elementary School.

 

August was elected to the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury in 1998 to fill the unexpired term of her husband, the late Allen August, where she served until 2004.

 

While serving on the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, August sat on various committees and was President of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Office of Community Services Board from 1999 until 2004, served on the board of IMCAL and was a member of the TRIAD SALT Council, as well as, a member of other various state and national organizations.

 

As a private citizen, August has worked to make a positive impact in her community through her work with the Project-Build-A-Future program which gives first-time home buyers a chance to buy affordable housing; the Lake Charles Serra Club which promotes and supports religious vocations; the Mayor's Human Relations Commission and the Allen P. August, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund which gives graduates from the Calcasieu Parish Adult Education program help in pursuing further education. 

 

August, a Democrat, is the mother of two children.  She belongs to Sacred Heart Church and is a member of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association and AARP.
