Impact Lake Charles AmeriCorps (ILCA) is a service learning program that gives individuals an opportunity to make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others that are served. It gives individuals an opportunity to assist with meeting the critical needs in the community.
 
Impact Lake Charles AmeriCorps is supported by a grant from the Corporation for National Community Service, Volunteer Louisiana in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and sponsored by the City of Lake Charles.  ILCA focuses primarily on providing health and safety education to the community. ILCA currently provides health and safety education to students in grades K-5 at Barbe, Johnson and Fairview Elementary.  Members also provide education such as safe sleep and fire safety in partnership with the Safe Sleep Task Force, Red Cross of SWLA, Lake Charles Fire Department and Safe Kids Lake Charles.  This program also provides much needed assistance with community service projects throughout the Lake Area.
 
Members receive training in many areas, which include First Aid/CPR, conflict resolution, team building, diversity appreciation and preparation for the work force.
 
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Have a high school diploma a or agree to obtain a high school diploma by the end of the service term
  • Have a GED or agree to obtain a GED by the end of the service term
  • Demonstrate reading and writing skills through a literacy assessment
  • Have letters of recommendation
  • Have experience with children
  • Be dependable
  • Be a team player
  • Have an excellent attitude
  • Be a self-starter
  • Have drive and determination
  • Have a genuine concern for the well-being of children
  • Be drug-free
Impact Lake Charles AmeriCorps will has two categories of members ; minimum time members and reduced-half time members. Minimum time members are expected to serve at least 300 hours during their term of service and reduced half-time members are expected to serve at least 675 hours.
 
Terms of Service will be as follows: 
 
  • Minimum time members:        August - Mid December or Mid December - May
  • Reduced-half time members:  August - May

Living Allowance: Members are not employees of the City of Lake Charles and therefore do not receive an hourly wage. Members are also not eligible for unemployment benefits. 

  • Minimum time members can earn a living allowance totaling no more than $1147 for their term of service.
  • Reduced-half time members can earn a living allowance totaling no more than $3,200 for their term of service.
 
Segal Education Award: At the completion of the contract and the member's term of service, members are eligible to receive an education award.
 
  • Minimum time members are eligible for an education award of $1,200 at the completion of their contract.
  • Reduced-half time members are eligible for an educational award of $2,199 at the completion of the contract.
