“Walk With Your Mayor” and “Kids to Parks Day” Will Coincide on May 16 in Lake Charles
Lake Charles residents will have two reasons to come to the lakefront on Saturday, May 16, 2015—to walk and to play. “Walk With Your Mayor” is scheduled on the Lakefront Promenade at 8:30 a.m. as part of the Partnership for a Healthier Southwest Louisiana’s City Challenge. Beginning at 10 a.m., the City’s Recreation and Parks Department will host a “Kids to Parks Day” at Millenium Park. The park event will coincide with the National Park Trust’s initiative to fight childhood obesity while discovering American parks through play.
“Walk With Your Mayor” (with Partnership for a Healthier SWLA)
Participants can register at the walk beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the south end of the Lake Charles Civic Center Promenade – across from Millennium Park – near the Marina entrance. There is no cost. The actual walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the south end of the Promenade, continue northward to the PPG Fountain, and back.
Mayor Roach and the City is competing against other Calcasieu Parish residents to get the most residents to participate in the initiative. The city with the largest participation per capita will be awarded with a traveling prize. If residents are unable to attend in person, they can fill out the online pledge at http://healthierswla.com/dare-to-be-healthy/city-challenge-start-walking-calcasieu/.
All residents are encouraged to get involved and join in the mission to reshape Calcasieu Parish by moving more, eating healthier and making better choices.
“Kids to Parks Day” (with National Park Trust)
Thousands of children nationwide will take part in a grassroots movement to discover America’s parks through play on Saturday, May 16. Mayor Randy Roach encourages locals to participate by exploring Millennium Park and other public parks within the city.
A special commemorative “Kids to Parks Day” is being planned at Millennium Park, Bord Du Lac Drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Special activities will include face painting, balloons, fun jumps, bowling, jump rope, train rides, Hula Hoop contest, splash dance, egg walk, dance entertainment and free snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy.
Said Mayor Randy Roach:
“Our parks and recreation areas, located in various neighborhoods throughout the city, give kids of all ages a place to enjoy the outdoors. I invite all Lake Charles residents to join me on May 16 for both outdoor events.”
