The City of Lake Charles is preparing for a heavy rain event that could begin in the area on late Wednesday, June 21 or early Thursday, June 22 and continue for several days. At this time, no interruption in city services are planned, and public works and public safety employees are preparing for possible flooding.

All residents are encouraged to follow these important steps in the event of a tropical storm threat or hurricane threat:

Listen to local emergency officials, and follow their instructions.  Listen to local TV and radio. for The City of Lake Charles Web site www.cityoflakecharles.com will have up-to-date information on related activities with links to local media.

Stock your home with food, water, batteries, flashlights, prescription medication, and other supplies.

Keep Storm Drains Cleared from clogging by removing debris from catch basins. You can also be proactive by picking up toys, limbs and other loose items in your yard that may be swept into streets and can easily clog catch basins.

Do Not Drive on Flooded Streets. Driving through moving water not only puts your safety into jeopardy because your vehicle can be swept off the road, but the wake created by your vehicle can also cause damage to homes along the street. If you come upon a flooded street, take an alternate route if at all possible. Motorists are encouraged to avoid flood-prone areas.

Plan for a possible evacuation.  Although an evacuation is unlikely, you should have a predetermined destination, and follow emergency routes pre-determined by parish and state officials.  Let relatives, friends and neighbors know where you are going, and ask them if they need assistance in evacuation.  Lock windows and doors.  Turn off electrical service at the main fuse or breaker box if flooding is imminent in the area where your home is located.

Help those with special needs or neighbors with challenging circumstances.  Make sure they have a plan of action in evacuating the area.  For information on the Special Needs Assistance Program, 911-SNAP, call the City at 491-1392 or 491-8707 or visit the Web site www.calcasieu911.com.
