REGIONAL ORCHID SHOW ON SATURDAY ONLY

Hours of operation for “Easter Parade of Orchids” have been amended due to concerns related to COVID-19. The regional orchid show will take place on Saturday, March 14 from 12 to 6 p.m. All previously scheduled Sunday activities are cancelled. The show, hosted by the Calcasieu Orchid Society, is free and open to the public. More information is also available on the society's Facebook page—Calcasieu Orchid Society.

A regional orchid show will take place at Historic City Hall, 1001 Ryan Street, on March 14 and 15, 2020 with a special sneak preview of orchids for sale on March 13. The show, hosted by the Calcasieu Orchid Society, is free and open to the public.

Orchids will both be on display and for sale at the event. Various orchid societies from throughout Louisiana will create displays of their members' orchids, each one interpreting this year's theme – An Easter Parade of Orchids – in a different way.

Hours of operation are noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 14, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 15.  The sneak preview of orchids for sale will be held on Friday, March 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. Displays designed by orchid societies through the region will not be complete at that time, but visitors are welcome to view the orchids that are for sale and purchase their first choices before the show officially opens.

An informal talk about how to select and care for orchids that will thrive in southwest Louisiana will be given by Calcasieu Orchid Society member Mary Richardson at 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. A huge variety of orchids will be on display including varieties that are not normally available in Lake Charles. They will be sold, as well as favorites such as phalaenopsis, commonly known as the moth orchid. Members of the Calcasieu Orchid Society will be on hand to advise people about which ones are the easiest to grow, which ones smell great, and how to care for them.

“Orchids are easy to grow,” insists Keith Joiner, president of the organization. “The key is not to overwater them. If you follow that important rule, orchids are pretty hardy – and they love our South Louisiana climate.”
