City of Lake Charles and Ward 3 Recreation to Co-Host Spring Midnight Basketball

The City of Lake Charles is relaunching “Spring Midnight Basketball” in an effort to offer safe, recreational activities for young people in Southwest Louisiana. In collaboration with Ward 3 Recreation, the spring league will begin on March 23, 2018 and run through May 18, 2018. Basketball games will be played each Friday night during this timeframe from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight at two recreation facilities: Pryce/Miller Community Center, located at 216 Albert Street; and the Donald Ray Stevens Community Center, located at 1619 Cessford Street. The program is open to youth ages 12 to 17 and is free of charge.

Each Friday session will feature a guest speaker, who will share his or her unique personal story. In addition, representatives from numerous community agencies will also be present to speak to attendees about various topics including job skills, resume writing, college/trade school applications, etc.

“Through Spring Midnight Basketball, the City aspires to offer an engaging, fun experience that allows participants to learn a life skill, or two, in the process,” said Mayor Nicholas Hunter. “While we understand that a number of young people in the area are drawn to basketball, we also recognize a large number of them love to ‘game’ as well.  To meet this need, we have partnered with Wal-Mart to provide PlayStation 4 (PS-4) video game consoles set up at each of the sites where Spring Midnight Basketball will be held.”
