Lake Charles Mayor’s Youth Partnership
Hosts “Shed the Bias” Day for Area Students

 

On Saturday, March 28, 2015, The Lake Charles Mayor’s Youth Partnership hosted “Shed the Bias” at the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum. The event encouraged students to remove preconceived opinions that may exist in regards to students from other areas and from varying backgrounds.

 

Each middle school and high school in Calcasieu Parish was given an opportunity to nominate individuals to participate. More than 75 students attended, and upon arrival each student was paired with students from other schools for a day full of activities, conversation and a round-table discussion with elected officials and community leaders from the area.

 

“This program helps promote a better understanding between students by encouraging them to work together to complete several fun, interactive challenges,” said Esther Vincent, City of Lake Charles Director of Community Development and Services. “Shed the Bias creates long-lasting community relationships that unite students, while encouraging them to accept the differences of others.”

 

Participating in the round-table discussion were Lake Charles Mayor Randy Roach, Sulphur Mayor Chris Duncan, William “Bill” Sommers, Office of Juvenile Justice and Byron Golston, Washington Marion Freshman Academy Teacher.
