On the evening of October 20 at 1911 Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center, the winners of The Mayor’s 10 art awards for the 2016-2017 academic year were announced.

The winners are Brianna Rose Brocato, Patrick DeVillier, Amar Evans, Caimen Gorge, Karleigh Hayden, Billie Painter, Savannah Robertson, Rhiannon Rollins, Cooper Self, and Alaya Thomas. Their art show will be displayed in the 10th floor lobby of the Mayor’s Office, City Hall, 326 Pujo St.

“Today is about recognizing art education and all that it teaches us,” said Mayor Randy Roach. “It’s most fitting that when people visit Lake Charles City Hall from all over the world, the first thing they see in the Mayor’s Office is artwork created by local students.”

The Mayor's 10 art awards program was created in 2006 as a partnership between Calcasieu Parish Art Specialists with the Calcasieu Parish School Board (CPSB), and the City of Lake Charles Mayor’s Office to feature the work of Calcasieu Parish K-12 students in a public forum such as the offices within City Hall.

The Mayor’s 10 program provides opportunities for the community to have access to the art, showcasing the unique talent of students who have been guided by public school art teachers in the area.

“The Calcasieu Parish Art Specialists are proud to work in a cultural community under the vision of Mayor Roach who recognizes the value of the arts, whether it is created, experienced or just appreciated,” said Bobbi Yancey, Art Specialist/Consultant, CPSB. “The student works selected each year reflect the culture of Louisiana as interpreted by each student. Images selected for this year’s exhibit include birds, Louisiana southern style architecture, a crawfish and a crab, a decorated fleur de lis, and more. The framed works of art are displayed for a year, returned to students and the process is repeated.  Through the years this partnership has provided a public showcase for 100 students.”

The Calcasieu Parish Art Specialists with the Calcasieu Parish School Board and the City of Lake Charles Mayor’s Office congratulate The Mayor’s 10 artists whose art work was selected for display for the 2016-2017 year.
