The City of Lake Charles recently entered into an agreement with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development authorizing City of Lake Charles debris removal contractors to pick up eligible debris along state rights-of-way located inside the City of Lake Charles incorporated limits.

This process began on Monday, February 1, 2021 and will end on Sunday, February 28, 2021. All eligible commercial debris should be placed as close to the road as possible by Friday, February 12, 2021. Debris should not be placed in a location that will cause drainage issues or visual site hazards.

FEMA provides regulations to local municipalities regarding debris removal from properties. Debris collection from commercial properties is typically ineligible because these entities are expected to retain insurance policies covering debris removal.

Although the City of Lake Charles has been granted approval for this limited “small business commercial properties” exception on debris removal, FEMA still requires these property owners to report any insurance proceeds collected for debris removal activities.

In line with FEMA requirements, commercial debris generated from areas such as shopping centers, industrial parks or manufacturing facilities is not eligible for commercial debris removal. Eligibility for debris removal will be determined in the field by the FEMA-approved debris monitoring contractor. The City of Lake Charles does not determine what is and what is not eligible for debris removal.
