City of Lake Charles Announces Phase II of #ReTreeLC Initiative
City of Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter was joined by representatives from Northrop Grumman, other elected officials, industry representatives and community members to announce the launch of Phase II of the City of Lake Charles’ successful #ReTreeLC Initiative.
Northrop Grumman, the presenting sponsor of Phase II, will team up with the City on Saturday, January 21, 2023 for a Community Tree Giveaway. This giveaway of native tree species will be held at Hillcrest Park, 2808 Hillcrest Drive, from 9 a.m. until noon. The giveaway will be held in conjunction with Louisiana Arbor Day and will be held just in time for prime tree-planting season. Each tree recipient will receive planting and care instructions.
In conjunction with this tree giveaway, additional partners have come on board to host employee volunteer-driven tree plantings at several area parks. Partners in these efforts include Sasol (Tuten and Riverside Parks), Tellurian (McMillan and JD Clifton Parks), Cheniere (LaGrange Soccer Park) and Lyondell Basell (Tuten Park).
“As we continue to recover and rebuild from the 2020 hurricanes, it is critical that we re-establish our natural environment by replanting trees across our city in a sustainable fashion. Phase I of #ReTreeLC was a tremendous success with more than 2,500 trees planted, helping restore our natural infrastructure. It is our hope, through this continued effort, to be leaders in the responsible reforestation of our City, but we cannot do it alone. We are thankful to our private partners who have helped this program succeed so far and to those participating in Phase II.”
In addition to planting trees and native grasses in public spaces, Phase II of the #ReTreeLC Initiative will also include free educational seminars for local students. The City is partnering with the Calcasieu Parish School Board, McNeese State University and the Calcasieu Parish Public Library to host educational outdoor classroom experiences for students at John F. Kennedy Early Childhood Center and Molo Middle School. These lessons are set to take place in the month of November.
