The City of Lake Charles is teaming up with the Children’s Museum of Lake Charles, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Calcasieu Parish School Board, Visit Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, the Port of Lake Charles and Sasol to present Port Wonder Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lake Charles Civic Center Contraband Room (900 Lakeshore Dr.).

This free and open to the public event will offer a sneak peek into what a visit to Port Wonder will look like once construction is complete on lakefront development project.

Port Wonder Family Fun Day will feature a variety of fun, educational, musical and interactive STEM activities for children. Games, refreshments and a host of other activities will also be available.

Representatives from the City of Lake Charles, Children’s Museum of Lake Charles and LDWF will also be on hand to offer a look at what exhibits will look like in the all-new state-of-the-art children’s museum and science and education center, both of which will be housed in Port Wonder.

“This project is a number of years in the making and has taken a lot of persistence and dedication from the team working to design what will reshape our lakefront,” said Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter. “We are thrilled to show the public a look at what the Port Wonder experience will include and look across the lake at the active construction site. We are so proud of this project and are confident the community will be proud as well.”

“Seeing Port Wonder, our future home take shape is simply magical,” Allyson Montgomery, Executive Director of the Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana, added. “We are now only a year away from welcoming visitors to our brand-new home and we are looking forward to having an opportunity, through Port Wonder Family Fun Day, to show our community what they have to look forward to when we open our doors in 2024.” 

Construction on the new project, located near the Gator Pond on the lake’s northern shore, is expected to be complete in the second quarter of 2024. 

Additional partners for Port Wonder Family Fun Day include the Calcasieu Parish Public Library, Lake Charles Symphony, Louisiana Region 5 STEM Center and Families for Inclusion.
